As a child, Morris Hodges watched his grandfather turn land into rows and rows of locally grown produce that fed and nourished a community.
Morris had been born on that same land, and now he is the farmer providing produce for the community. After building a television news career in both Chicago and Los Angeles, Morris headed home to Mound Bayou, Mississippi.
He saw an opportunity to continue the legacy that his grandfather started. That opportunity is known as Morris Watermelon Farm aka “Bigman Watermelon Farm”.
Along with varieties of cantaloupe, Morris specializes in growing the Charleston Gray watermelon.
This particular type got its name from its greenish-gray rind. The Charleston Gray can grow really large and has a sweet and juicy flesh. Although residents in and around Mound Bayou are obvious fans of the Morris Watermelon Farm, surrounding schools, health centers, and restaurants all rely on Morris to deliver the summery sweet goodness right to their doors.
Aside from time spent on the farm, Morris is also committed to investing time in his community.
One of his favorite activities is the annual Morris Watermelon Farm giveaway. On this day each year, Morris provides free watermelon to the children who live in nearby public housing. For him, seeing those smiling faces is priceless and he looks forward, more and more, to the event the next year.
In the future, Morris plans to expand the farm to include other fruit and vegetables.
For now though, if you haven’t tried a watermelon from Morris Watermelon Farm, you should definitely hurry before the season is over. The taste will make you thank yourself!
